Work to make an accident blackspot near Pembroke safer is merely on hold – and will be completed by April, Simon Hart MP has been told.

The Nash Fingerpost junction has seen numerous accidents and several fatalities, but following lobbying from local groups and South Pembrokeshire Mr Hart, the Welsh Assembly Government agreed to make it safer.

“There was some work carried out earlier this year which cause quite a lot of disruption,” said Mr Hart.

“But at the end of it all it just seemed that a new bike path had been installed and nothing else.

“I had a constituent get in touch to say they were concerned that was all that was going to done so I contacted Welsh transport minister Edwina Hart.”

Mrs Hart has now confirmed that more work will be taking place to widen the carriageway and central reservation – once the turnaround at the nearby Valero refinery has been completed.

“I understand that the roadworks were due to have been complete by May but they then got pushed back to mid-October which would have been at the peak of shutdown activity at the refinery,” said Mr Hart.

“Quite sensibly work has been put on hold until the shutdown is finished in mid-November and I am reassured that Mrs Hart says all the roadworks will be completed by April next year.

“These safety improvements have been a long time coming and I still think that a roundabout would have been the ideal answer, but I am pleased that this junction will soon be safer.”
