A Letterston woman is delivering life--saving aid to families in remote Nepalese villages whose lives have been destroyed after the country's terrible earthquake.

Amy Johnson, 24, was in the city of Pokhara, when the first quake hit. Her parents Babs and Clive Johnson spent 24 hours on tenterhooks, they believed that Amy was at a music and dance festival in Kathmandu. Contact was completely cut off and they did not know whether she had survived.

Although tremors from the first quake were felt in Pokhara the city did not experience the terrible devastation of Kathmandu.

Since the quakes Amy, who is well known locally as part of belly dancing duo Sun Dancers of Ra, and friends have raised more than £3,000 and formed their own aid group. They have hired transport and headed out to remote villages cut off from the main channels of support.

The group's first mission provided over 16,000 meals to 535 people, enough for ten days, along with shelters and medicines. They even took a doctor with them to see if anyone needed medical help.

While in the villages of Ghandruk and Landruk they witnessed children as young as two clearing rubble and elderly, frail people doing heavy construction work.

"Families are still sleeping in houses that are at risk of collapsing and, with the monsoon fast approaching, these people need a safe place to sleep and to store their food," said former Ysgol Bro Gwaun pupil Amy.

The group's next trip was to Bandipur. With £1,000 that had been raised through family, friends and Facebook, they provided 288 sheets of corrugated sheeting, enough for 35 homes and a community building.

"The village was reminiscent of a war zone," said Amy."I'm still trying to comprehend the extent of the damage and the constantly shifting emotions of hope, relief and heartache."

Amy's mother Babs, who owns Helena Mathias Naturals in Fishguard, said:

"We are very very proud of her that she has stayed to help out. It's quite typical of her character; she is free- spirited and adventurous.

"I'm looking forward to seeing her. When she walks through the door I'll give her a big hug and probably have some tears."

Amy will stay in Nepal until Saturday. She is collecting money for charity Karma Flights and using donations to buy food for a local hospital.

Donations can be given to Babs at Naturals in Fishguard or sent via PayPal using Amy's e-mail address: amelia.penelope@live.co.uk as the recipient.
