FIVE colourful flags inspired by the River Cleddau are gracing the centre of Haverfordwest.

Organised by The Lab, the ‘Fly the Flag’ project involved almost 200 pupils from five local primary schools. At special workshops, the children were shown pictures of sections of the Cleddau and came up with ideas for the flags’ designs.

Local company A&E Adventures – whose flags are usually spotted at music festivals like Glastonbury – translated the pupils’ plans in to the set of abstract designs now brightening up the riverside.

The flags (from right to left) represent Higgon’s Well, The Priory, The Town, The Old Mart and The Old Sawmills, looking back towards Haverfordwest.

The ceremony to launch the flags on Monday (May 25) marked the beginning of The Lab’s three-year, arts-based initiative designed to change people’s perceptions of Haverfordwest, and bring the community together to inspire and shape the regeneration of the town.

The new Mayor of Haverfordwest, Councillor Sue Murray, was invited to give a speech at the event.

“I was struck by how fantastic they look – they really have the ‘wow’ factor,” said Cllr Murray. “This is just the start of a very exciting three-year project, and it’s great to be doing something different in the town.”
