A RECENT survey has found that most people regard Fishguard and Goodwick as a great place to live.

More than 250 local people were quizzed as part of the Communities Together project, which seeks to promote community spirit and address alcohol-related problems.

Of those questioned 79% said the towns had close and supportive communities, more than 80% thought they were a good place to grow up and grow old in, and 75% said that their neighbours would help if someone was facing a crisis.

There were some areas in need of improvement after 53% of people felt there could be more opportunities for younger and older people to get together, and 46% thought that people involved in sports in the area tended to drink to excess after the game.

Communities Together project manager, Marc Mordey said: “This research shows that Fishguard and Goodwick really have a lot going for them. Most people feel that they’re living in a great part of the world and that they can rely on those around them – and that’s certainly been my experience too.

“Our survey did identify a few local problems, but there’s a strong will to do something about them. For example, people felt that there could be more opportunities for young and old to get to know each other, and we’ve already been running some very popular intergenerational events. Similarly, people were aware of the heavy drinking culture that often surrounds sports clubs. That’s one reasons we were so please to see Fishguard AFC signing up for Dry January this year, and we’ll be looking to work with other sports clubs in the area to help players and spectators enjoy a drink or two without letting the side down.”
