The daughter of a man who received care, support and lifesaving treatment at Withybush Hospital's cancer services has raised more than £2,000 by raffling a prize-winning piece of art.

Earlier this year Pembroke Dock Community School pupil, Elly Neville, created an award-winning collage of the Pembrokeshire Flag. She then decided to raffle her creation to raise vital funds for the planned upgrade of cancer services at Withybush.

Five-year-old Elly's dad Lyn was a patient at the Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) and Ward 10 after a bone marrow transplant in 2005.

Both Lyn and his wife Ann were full of praise for the dedicated staff and facilities at the hospital.

"Ward 10 was a safety net to us during Lyn's treatment and recovery," said Ann. "As a family we will never forget the care we received."

Lyn added: "The CDU and Ward 10 at Withybush Hospital have played an important part in the lives of cancer patients in Pembrokeshire and their families over many years. We as a family are pleased to be doing what we can to support the planned developments."

The winning ticket was drawn last Wednesday and announced as Peter and Marilyn Mitchell. They are happy for Elly to continue using the flag for fundraising purposes; it will feature on a fundraising float at Pembroke Dock Carnival on August 1.

"Peter and I are delighted to have won this flag and very pleased to have been able to support Elly's Fundraising for Ward 10, a very worthy cause." said Marilyn.

Elly initially hoped to raise £500 for Ward 10. However she has smashed through that total, raising £2040 at the last count.

"It's fantastic," said Ann. "Elly has done really well and we've been surprised by the public response.

"It's also about raising awareness for Ward 10 and what is going to be done there and keeping it going."

She said Withybush Hospital Cancer Services Fund Raising Group were also building on the momentum the fundraising flag has created.

Donations can still be made on JustGiving Ward 10 Flag and by Direct Payment at all Pembrokeshire Branches of Barclays Bank; Elly's Pembrokeshire Flag (T905).
