CROWDS are expected to line the streets of Fishguard and Goodwick today (Saturday, August 1) to welcome the return of the Wales Triathlon.

Winner of the 220 triathlon awards for best triathlon, the Ocean Lava event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run.

The event attracts a mix of elite athletes and first timers, many of which are gearing up for Ironman Wales in September.

Looking to defend his title will be Tenby’s own Oliver Simon, who finished last year’s course in just over 4 hours and 22 minutes.

The swim takes place at Fishguard harbour at 11am, followed by the cycle to St Davids via Mathry and Trefin before returning back to Fishguard for the coastal run.

The first athletes are expected to arrive at the finish line from 3.20pm onwards.

Running alongside the Wales Triathlon is the Wales Sprint Triathlon, which starts at 1:15pm.

Athletes are to expect a sea swim of 750m, followed by a 13 mile bike, before entering the streets of Fishguard for a 4 mile run.

Taking part will be triathlon superstar Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack, who has two Ironman World Championships to his name, along with an ITU World Championship, and an ITU Long Distances World Championship.

There will be road closures in place. For more information visit http://www.walestriathlon.com/
