A public meeting is taking place in Tenby tonight (Thursday) to harness further support for the campaign against the threatened closure of the town's Avenue Centre.

The much-loved centre caters for adults with learning disabilities and a storm of protest broke out at the end of last year when Pembrokeshire County Council decided to start consultation on its future.

The consultation period has now been extended, with the authority's Older Persons, Health and Well-Being scrutiny committee recently being told that no decision would be made on the centre's future without ful assessments of the needs of the adults who use it.

More than 2,500 people have now signed petitions opposing the centre's closure, with over 1,300 signatures on the online petition at change.org and over 1,200 on paper petitions in the area.

The meeting at the De Valence Pavilion, Tenby tonight at 7.30pm has been arranged by Tenby Town Council in response to a request for help for the campaign from Kate Schofield, whose twin sisgter, Maggie, had been attending the centre since she was a teenager.

Invitations have been extended to local politicians to attend, but Pembrokeshire County Council officers are not expected to be present.
