BUTTONS the famous Pembrokeshire sea dog has sailed into his final harbour.

The 18-year-old terrier-cross, who had spent seven years cruising the Mediterreanean Mediterranean with his family, hit the headlines last year after being quarantined when he was returned to Britain after the death of his master.

The little dog –known and loved for his magnificent beard and love of cappuccino – was freed from kennels to spend his last months with owners, Jane Spiers and her son Tom.

But on Friday May 13, the final farewells were said to Buttons when his health finally failed.

“He was such a special dog, and we have been so blessed to have had him in our lives for so long,” said Mrs Spiers.

Mrs Spiers, her husband Colin and Tom left their home in Llanddewi Velfrey in 2008 to sail the Mediterranean on their 40ft-foot yacht, Hydaway.

In May 2015, Mr Spiers, aged 71, died suddenly while in Turkey and the family returned to the UK, leaving Buttons held for six weeks in quarantine in Bristol because of a two-day gap in his rabies vaccinations in 2012.

Mrs Spiers, who feared that Buttons could die before release, appealed to the Western Telegraph for help with MP Simon Hart following up the case.

Buttons – a cairn/jack russell cross –was freed within days.

“We were so relieved to be able to enjoy Buttons’ company for nearly another year after he was released,” said Mrs Spiers.

"He loved meeting people of all walks of life and of all nationalities, and they loved him. He touched so many people’s lives.”
