Zombies, royals and mermaids processed through the sunny streets of Newport on Saturday, as the town's annual carnival entertained both locals and visitors alike.

The carnival procession boasted four impressive floats; Veg Wars from Wholefoods of Newport, Newport Untrained Theatrical Society with Aladdin on Tour, the school float, which transported the Carnival King and Queen, their attendants and the Fairy Queen and the winning residents of Maes Ingli as the sweet Basset family.

The procession of floats was accompanied by a walking procession of both young and old in fancy dress. It drew many locals out of their houses and onto the streets to cheer and wave as it passed by.

Ending at the Parrog the carnival provided a plethora of bouncy castles enjoyed by the children as well as face painting and refreshments.

"I was pleased with the day," said Newport Mayor, Andrew Benham. "The weather held up well for us. Goodwick Brass Band was very nice to see and hear and there was a good turnout.

"People put a lot of effort into the floats and walking tableaux and it was lovely to see everybody there.

"I would like to thank all those people that helped put it together."
