Final Sponsored Walk !

On Saturday July 25th, Daphne, myself and Graham set off with mixed feeling for our last of the Sponsored walks for Raise The Roof Appeal.

Although pleased to have completed the challenge, we were sad to lose that wonderful feeling of achievement after completing each section and the support of friends who walked with us on a lot of the walks.

We do meet regularly on Federation Walks and our walking Group W.I.P.S (Walkers in Pembrokeshire Socially) – but the sponsored walks were really special with a lot of laughs along the way. Graham would usually be a little way ahead of us to meet oncoming walkers with – “see these two ladies behind me with a combined age of 137” – they are walking the whole of the Coast path to raise money for repair to WI House roof. But when on a remote stretch – Graham would jump out from behind a tree or bush and try to frighten me, “just to keep you alert” was his excuse!

After all the rain of recent the weather the day was lovely, plenty of sunshine and not to hot.

Leaving the cars at Amroth we caught the small bus that runs between Pendine and Tenby. We were 24 walkers, so after picking up more passengers along the way I began to think we would never make it up the hills!

Eventually arriving in Tenby we started the walk - from Tenby to Saundersfoot is a strenuous one and the path in places very muddy.

Our ‘Highway Man collected quite a bit of money in the sponsor box from walkers on the path and people who were on the beach.

On reaching Saundersfoot we were greeted by a welcome committee that our Federation Chairman had organised and all given a glass of either orange juice or bucks fizz.

We also got a welcome and congratulation from Mr Philip Baker, County Councillor at Saundersfoot.

The Chairman Mary - along with a few more walked the rest of the way to Amroth with us. This section was a lot easier than the last.

Once again Mary had arranged a welcome committee for us, other members from the Federation were there with the WI flag Mr Martin James, Chairman of Amroth Community Council and his wife were at the finishing line to welcome us. Summerhill WI had laid on a great celebration tea party and Mary had made and iced a lovely cake.

We were thanked and presented with cards, and gifts and flowers from Mary, neither Daphne, myself or Graham had expected this and were very moved by it all.

Daphne and Shirley have walked over 186 miles and wish to thank all who have supported them along the way, encouraging them or walking with them. They especially want to thank Daphne’s husband Graham who has walked every inch of the way with them, helping, supporting and egging them on, especially on the tough sections, of which there were quite a few, and also many thanks go to Shirley’s husband Bill for his help with the transport.
