Capital One Cup – Round Two:

Swansea City 3–0 York City

GOALS from Nathan Dyer, Matt Grimes and substitute Marvin Emnes eased Swansea into the third round of the Capital One Cup as they comfortably disposed of League Two side York City at the Liberty Stadium last night.

Garry Monk chose to make 11 changes to the line-up that began against Sunderland on the weekend, with Ki Sung-Yeung the only player not to be making his first start of the season.

However, there was no sign of rustiness early on as his team went ahead inside 90 seconds.

Wayne Routledge threaded a through ball to new signing Eder, and although he was bravely denied by York keeper Scott Flinders, Nathan Dyer was on hand to stab home the rebound from close range.

Lone striker Eder was denied again from close range moments later, as away defender Marvin McCoy did just enough to stop him diverting a Nathan Dyer cross into the net, before Routledge saw his curling shot well tipped away by Flinders.

At that point, it appeared the visitors were in for a long night, and the one way traffic continued as Ki saw his angled shot deflected wide, and from the resultant Grimes corner Swans centre back Kyle Bartley volleyed wastefully over.

But on the 20 minute mark, the Minstermen enjoyed a purple patch that saw them go close three times in quick succession.

The lively James Berrett had a goal bound shot blocked by Jordi Amat - before York striker Vadaine Oliver met captain Russell Penn’s corner, only to see his effort acrobatically tipped away by Swansea’s debutant keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

But the Swedish stopper was then left rooted to the spot as Berrett surged into the area, and his effort again deflected off Amat but this time crashed against the bar.

The home side regained control before the break and Grimes missed a glorious chance to double the lead when he side footed wide from point blank range after Eder’s low cross.

The former Braga man was then frustrated as his shot struck Dave Winfield and deflected just over, before he headed wide a Grimes corner.

And on the stroke of half time, Eder was again denied a home debut goal, turning well in the area but seeing his shot palmed away by Flinders.

Early in the second half, York had another opening when Oliver capitalised on some hesitant defending to curl an angled shot inches wide of the top corner – but it proved to be the League Two side’s last real opportunity.

At the other end Bartley headed a Routledge cross past the near post but on 64 minutes, the second goal finally came when Grimes jinked into the area and fired a low left foot shot which cannoned in off the post via a deflection.

The goal killed the game as a contest, and there were few openings for either side in a quiet final quarter before Swansea substitute Marvin Emnes wasted a chance when he was set up by Dyer, but hesitated at the crucial moment.

But with a minute of normal time remaining, he made amends as he latched onto a through ball from fellow sub Jonjo Shelvey, and hammered an emphatic left foot half volley high into the net.

It completed a routine win for Monk’s side, who will now travel to Hull City in the third round of a competition they famously won in the 2012/2013 season.
