Swansea midfielder Leon Britton said it was “great just to be back out on the pitch” after he captained the side to a 3-0 win over York City at the Liberty Stadium last night.

After a summer of speculation linking him with a move away from South Wales, the 32-year-old committed his short term future to the club earlier this month, and appeared as a late substitute in the 2-0 win over Newcastle on August 15th.

“I was very pleased to get back out there and wear the kit from the start,” he said

“I think it was my first full 90 minutes since January and to captain the side as well was a huge honour.

“But in fairness, all the lads who haven’t been playing in the league have been working hard in training and the manager has given a chance tonight, and we’re all delighted about that.”

Indeed, Garry Monk made 11 changes to the side that drew with Sunderland on Saturday, and despite a couple of nervous moments in the first half, the Swans were rarely troubled against the League Two side.

“We did well,” said Britton.

“Obviously we had a great start, getting the goal within the first 90 seconds or so.

“We maybe got a bit sloppy for 10-15 minutes in the first half but that’s understandable with 10 of the players not having started a game this season.

“But it was a good workout – and three goals, a clean sheet and into the next round. Obviously we’re happy with that.”

Britton was part of the Swansea side that famously won the Capital One Cup in the 2012/2013 season, but after the Swans drew Hull City away in the third round, he insisted it was too early to be thinking about going all the way this time around.

“A cup run has to start somewhere but that’s all tonight is – the start of it.

“Obviously this competition holds great memories for us but Wembley is a long way off at this stage.”

Britton and the Swans will face the Hull during the week commencing Monday, September 21st, with the exact date of the tie to be confirmed.
