There's no stopping the brilliant progress of dedicated international local boxer Charlene Jones who was crowned the Great Britain Elite Women’s Champion in Scotland, writes Gordon Thomas.
The extremely talented orthodox boxer, who hails from Pembroke Dock, really lived up to her full billing as she was crowned the GB champion for the second time in her impressive career.
The highly skilful four-time Welsh champion beat Scotland’s Eftychia Kathopouli in a hard fought split decision in the 60kg semi-final, and the following day Jones excelled picking up an unanimous victory in final against tasty England champion Louise Orton.
The GB Elite Boxing Finals were staged at The Alhambra, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.
This title was the cherry on the cake for Jones, who has worked hard for many years under the close scrutiny of Merlins Bridge Amateur Boxing Club trainer Graham Brockway.
Jones is part of the current Welsh Women’s Boxing Elite Squad who are preparing for the Commonwealth Games, which will take place in April 2018 at the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Jones is determined to win a medal at the Women’s European Championships that will be held in November.
“I’m definitely up with the best (boxers) of them now,” said Charlene. “I have to stay fit and focussed and I’m confident that I can win a medal at the European Championships.”
The 24-year-old British Champion is is appealing to any generous Pembrokeshire business or sponsor who could financially help with living costs, and supporting this brilliant boxer to reach her full potential.
